Countertop FAQs
Choosing new countertops can completely change how your kitchen or bathroom looks, feels, and functions. Countertops are not just a surface. They are where meals are prepared, homework gets done, guests gather, and everyday life happens. Because they play such an important role, you want materials that look beautiful and perform well for years. At Smith Plumbing & Heating / Kitchen & Bath, we bring more than 70 years of hands-on remodeling experience to every project. As a family-owned company, we guide you from design through installation with one dedicated team, so the process stays simple and stress-free.
Below, we answer the most common questions we hear from homeowners about countertop materials, brands, installation, and what to expect during your remodel.
What countertop materials do you offer?
We offer a carefully selected range of high-quality quartz and laminate countertops so that homeowners can find options that match their style, performance needs, and budget. Our showroom features trusted brands that are known for durability and long-lasting beauty.
Our countertop brands include:
- Viatera
- Spectrum Quartz
- MSI Premium Natural Quartz
- Cambria
- Caesarstone
- Silestone by Cosentino
- Wilsonart
- Formica
These manufacturers provide a wide variety of colors, patterns, and finishes, which makes it easy to achieve everything from a timeless marble look to a sleek modern design.
What is the difference between quartz and laminate countertops?
Quartz and laminate both have their strengths, but they serve different needs and price points.
Quartz countertops are engineered using natural stone particles and resins, which creates a dense, durable, and non-porous surface. Laminate countertops are constructed with layered materials and decorative finishes, which makes them lightweight and affordable while still offering attractive designs.
Quartz features include:
- Exceptional durability and strength
- Strong resistance to scratches and stains
- Non-porous surface that does not require sealing
- Premium, stone-like appearance
- Long lifespan with minimal maintenance
Laminate features include:
- Budget-friendly pricing
- Lightweight and easy installation
- Wide variety of colors and patterns
- Modern styles that mimic stone and wood
- Simple replacement if you want to update later
If you are planning a long-term upgrade, quartz countertops are often the better investment. If you want a cost-effective refresh, laminate countertops can be an excellent solution.
Which countertop brand is right for my home?
The best brand depends on your goals, design style, and budget. During your showroom visit, we help you compare samples and finishes under real lighting so you can see how each option looks in person.
For example, Cambria and Silestone are popular for bold veining and high-end aesthetics. Spectrum Quartz and MSI offer great value with a wide color selection. Wilsonart and Formica are ideal for practical, affordable laminate surfaces. Our team walks you through the pros and cons of each option so you can make a confident decision.
Are quartz countertops easy to maintain?
Quartz countertops are extremely easy to care for, which is one of the reasons they are so popular with busy families. Because the surface is non-porous, it resists staining and does not require sealing like natural stone.
Most cleaning only requires mild soap and water. You should still use cutting boards and trivets to protect the surface from sharp objects and high heat, but everyday maintenance is quick and simple.
Can you help me design my kitchen or bathroom around my countertops?
Yes, we provide complete design support from start to finish.
Our in-house team works with you to coordinate your countertops with cabinets, flooring, backsplashes, and fixtures. Because we handle everything under one roof, you do not have to manage multiple contractors or schedules.
Our services include:
- Personalized design consultations
- Material and color coordination
- Professional measurements
- Fabrication planning
- Expert installation
This streamlined approach saves time and helps ensure consistent quality throughout your remodel.
How durable are quartz countertops for everyday use?
Quartz countertops are built to handle daily life. They perform well in kitchens with heavy cooking, active families, and frequent entertaining. The surface resists scratches, chips, and stains better than many natural stones, which makes it a smart choice for high-traffic spaces.
Many homeowners choose quartz because it maintains its appearance even after years of regular use.
Do you fabricate and install countertops in-house?
We actually don’t template and install the counters ourselves fully. While we template and install Laminate, we don’t fabricate it. We use local fabricators (based on the material) to provide the product itself. Their experienced team members will template, fabricate, and install.
Working with our in-house team provides several advantages:
- Clear communication
- Consistent craftsmanship
- Accurate measurements
- Faster scheduling
- Greater accountability
You will work with one company from start to finish, which makes the entire process smoother and more reliable.
How long does countertop installation take?
The timeline varies depending on the size, complexity, and material of the project, but most installations are completed in one day. Once precisely templating has been completed, standard stone materials take 1-2 weeks to be ready for installation. The timeline for specific project and product will be discussed further based on what’s needed.
In many cases, a countertop installation can be completed in one day. Larger kitchens or custom layouts may require additional time, but we always communicate the schedule clearly in advance.
Can I replace my countertops without replacing my cabinets?
In many cases, you can replace countertops without changing your cabinets. If your cabinets are structurally sound and properly leveled, we can install new countertops directly on top of them. This option provides a fresh look while keeping costs lower than a full remodel.
We always inspect your existing cabinetry first to ensure everything is safe and ready for new surfaces.
What countertop edge styles and finishes are available?
Edge profiles and finishes add personality and polish to your countertops. We offer multiple styles to match traditional, transitional, or modern designs.
Common options include:
- Straight edge
- Eased edge
- Beveled edge
- Ogee edge
- Waterfall edge
You can also choose between glossy polished finishes and softer matte looks, depending on the feel you prefer.
What are the advantages of choosing laminate countertops?
Laminate countertops remain a smart and stylish choice for many homes. Modern laminate designs are far more realistic than older versions, and many patterns closely resemble stone or wood.
Laminate works especially well for laundry rooms, offices, or budget-conscious kitchen updates. It delivers attractive results at a lower price point while still being easy to maintain.
